Boardwalk Empire’s Charlie Cox will be starring in CBS’ new untitled pilot.

Charlie Cox will be taking the lead role in CBS’ upcoming untitled television show. The Boardwalk Empire alum will be returning to CBS in a pilot described as a “Wall Street drama” from executive producer John Cusack. The drama will take place in the world of Wall Street, which includes money and power. Cox will be starring as Jackson, an inherently good Wall Street hedge fund trader who has returned from service in Iraq. The story was written by Justified writers Taylor Elmore and Ben Cavell, and was based on an idea created with the aid of Elmore, Cavell, Cusack and Kevin McCabe. The pilot will be executive produced by Justified’s Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly.

Charlie Cox is no stranger to CBS as he starred in last season’s pilot The Ordained. Cox is also a veteran of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, in which he starred in for two seasons. In addition, his long resume includes Stardust, Moby Dick and Hello Carter.

CBS has a great lineup of drama pilots for this new season. We can expect Extant and Battle Creek, which have both already received direct to series orders for this summer. Other dramas include Madame Secretary, Scorpion, and CSI and NCIS spinoffs.

Downtown LA – The Emmys saw a lot of action last night in Downtown Los Angeles. The huge award show everyone was waiting for saw a lot of surprises, and overall, the best man (or woman) took home the award. One of the biggest categories that was surrounded by speculation was who was going to win the Outstanding Drama Series category. With terrific television shows in the category, such as Homeland, Breaking Bad and House of Cards, everyone knew it was going to be a tight race. Other notable moments was Modern Family continuing its winning streak as they received the Outstanding Comedy Series award. The Variety Show category welcomed a newcomer as The Colbert Show took home the win. This year, The Voice won the title of best Reality-Competition Program, while Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn from Project Runway were given the award for best Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Program.

With Neil Patrick Harris as host there were plenty of laughs to be had, and Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were never far from making their next joke, although both ladies were nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, but the title went to Julia Louis-Dreyfus of Veep.

The New Faces of ‘SNL’

The new cast for the 39th season of "Saturday Night Live" was revealed this week. The season premiere is Saturday, September 28.
The newest additions to the cast for the 39th season of “Saturday Night Live” was revealed this week. The season premiere is Saturday, September 28.

Saturday Night Live has been on the air since 1975, and they have recently announced exciting information about their newest upcoming season. The 39th season of SNL will be airing on Saturday, September 28, and will be showcasing a group of 6 new castmembers. Beck Bennett, Kyle Mooney, John Milhiser, Noel Wells, Brooks Wheelan and Mike O’Brien will all be appearing on the new season next Saturday. These additions mark the most sweeping changes NBC has made to the show in its 39-season history. The Saturday Night Live premiere will have Tina Fey as the host and will feature Arcade Fire as the musical performance.

While most of these castmembers are all new to SNL, Mike O’Brien has a history with the late-night live television sketch comedy. Mike has been part of the writing department for the past 4 seasons, so he should be very comfortable as the new season starts. Another newcomer, Brook Wheelan was a late add-on, but the Los Angeles-based stand-up comedian is ready for the challenge. The show has a long history of casting stand-ups, such as Norm Macdonald, Colin Quinn and Chris Rock, all of whom had more than enough charisma and wit for the show.

Saturday Night Live also received big news earlier this summer when it was announced that their long-time castmember Seth Meyers was offered to host Late Night on NBC that will be starting in February. It has not been confirmed whether he will be leaving SNL altogether.

Season 16 of “Big Brother”

"Big Brother" has been renewed for a 15th season that will air next summer.
“Big Brother” has been renewed for a 16th season that will air next summer on CBS.

Big Brother is a television reality game show that has been a hit since it first premiered in 2000 on CBS.  With the 15th season wrapping up this week, it was only fitting for the network to announce the show’s renewal for a 16th season that is set to air next summer. Big Brother has been going strong for 14 years and the airing of the September 5th episode this month marked the show’s 500th episode.

The show follows a group of HouseGuests who live, eat and sleep in the Big Brother House, isolated from the outside world and under constant video camera surveillance for 3 months. The HouseGuests compete in a series of competitions throughout the season for a chance at the grand prize of $500,000. The group of HouseGuests vote each other off each week, and at the end of the season when there are only 2 contestants left, the last seven evicted become the “Jury of Seven” that will choose who wins the grand prize. The game is especially interesting because while contestants fight to outlast everyone in the show, they must also avoid burning any bridges because in order to win they need the most allies.

Julie Chen has been the host of Big Brother since its first season. The show is executive produced by Emmy Award-winning producer Alison Grodner and Rich Meehan for Fly in the Wall Entertainment.

Summer Television is Making a Splash

Under the Dome premiered on CBS earlier this year and has been renewed for Summer 2014.
Under the Dome premiered on CBS earlier this year and has been renewed for a second season in Summer 2014.

Under the Dome is an original television series based on the Stephen King novel by the same name. The show premiered on CBS earlier this summer in June and it has since been a hit, proven by CBS’ quick renewal of the show for a second season to premiere in 2014. Scripted programming is rare during the summer months, but CBS may have struck gold with their success this summer.

Earlier this week CBS handed out a straight-to-series order for Extant, a television show that Steven Spielberg will be co-executive producing. Those at CBS believe that this futuristic thriller will be able satisfy peoples’ high-quality programming during the summer, and it is set to play alongside Under the Dome next summer.

While Under the Dome changed the face of summer television, CBS has assured everyone that they will continue with their regular 22-episode season approach, which continues to be the most popular trend. There is still hope for great television year-round, and hopefully it will not only be CBS that is provides it.

Shark Week is Back for the Summer

Shark Week starts on Sunday, August 4th on the Discovery Channel.
Shark Week starts on Sunday, August 4th on the Discovery Channel.

With the recent obsession over Syfy’s “Sharknado” in social media, the Discovery Channel’s Shark Week has come at just the right time. The network’s yearly Shark Week starts on Sunday, August 4th and will include 7 days of television programs purely about sharks. This fun-filled week of sharks first started in 1987 and this weekend will mark their 27th year. This year’s slogan is “It’s a Bad Week to be a Seal” and has been promoted through their Snuffy the Seal campaign on YouTube.

Shark Week will include 11 hours of new programming made just for Shark Week, with sensational titles such as “Megalodon: The Monster Shark Lives,” “Sharkpocolypse” and “Voodoo Sharks.” Discovery Channel has also expanded the programming to include a new late-night live talk show that will recap highlights each night. This new addition, “Shark after Dark,” will be hosted by comedian Josh Wolf who will infuse humor into America’s much anticipated week of sharks. In 2011, Shark Week was hosted by Andy Samberg who was a big hit because of his comedy and high profile. Last year’s host was Philip DeFranco, but this year’s official host has not been announced yet.

Shark Week takes place every summer and was originally developed to raise awareness and respect for sharks. People are intrigued by these dangerous marine animals, and Discovery Channel has made an outlet for people to learn more about them and enjoy a lighthearted humor that surrounds the entire event. Last year, Shark Week brought in a cumulative 21.4 million of viewers, up from the 18.6 million in 2011. Last year, Discovery Channel also took the 18-49 demographic for non-scripted cable networks that week.
